AwesomeMath Year-round

The AwesomeMath Year-round (AMY) provides students with further opportunities to enlarge their mathematical horizons and hone problem solving skills, particularly in those fields from where Olympiad problems are drawn. Rather than concentrating solely on problem-solving, the material covered will familiarize students with important mathematical concepts and widely applicable methods of proof. AMY will extend and solidify the mathematics learned during the AwesomeMath Summer Program (AMSP). In turn, the next AMSP will re-energize the students by bringing them together with instructors and their peers. It will involve activities that are difficult to coordinate remotely, such as cooperative teaching and learning or working under time pressure.

There will be eight segments of the AMY spread monthly throughout the school year. During each segment students will receive a set of lecture notes on certain concepts. The notes will start with the basics and work towards the more interesting and difficult results in the topic. Segment authors will strive to present new material to all participants in each segment.

The lecture notes will be accompanied by carefully-chosen problems which the students will be required to work on. Some subset of the problems will have to be mailed in for grading. After receiving the notes and problems, students will have about a month to read the materials, solve and write-up complete solutions to the required problems, and mail their solutions to the graders. Segment authors will be available online to answer questions or give hints. Reading outside of the lecture notes will be encouraged and a reading list will be provided. Within three weeks of sending in the solutions students will receive their graded work back with comments and explanations. They will also receive full solutions to all the problems that focus on the motivation behind each result. This is one of the key ways AMY differs from working problems out of a book.

All AMY participants will receive a number of reference books that either go along with certain segments or cover Olympiad problems in general. Problems may be assigned from these books and students may be referred to the books for some lecture notes.
